Michael qualified as a solicitor in 1971 after reading Law at Birmingham University. He is well-known in West Midlands legal circles.
Until the 1990s his speciality was heavy-weight commercial litigation. He acted for the Director of Housing in the Westminster Dame Shirley Porter gerrymandering case. He was also involved in Stanton v. Jones which went to the Court of Appeal and led to a change in the law in relation to party boundaries.
For the last twenty years or so he has specialised in employment law and has been involved in a number of reported decisions. Presently he advises employers and senior executives, negotiating executive severance packages on their behalf.
